The City of Cape Town‘s Municipal Planning Tribunal has approved key aspects of the City’s development application for the planned Dillon Lane social housing project in Woodstock, South Africa. Key portions of the housing development application, including subdivision and rezoning, have been approved.

This is a positive step forward for the City as it allows it to continue with the important work of developing the housing project. The next key step is the submission of the Site Development Plan (SDP) to further prepare the site for construction commencement. The SDP will also provide another opportunity for the City to engage with the public on the development.

Lane Social Housing project

The social housing project is expected to provide 160 opportunities to qualifying beneficiaries. This is part of Cape Town City’s planned development of more than 2000 affordable housing units on well-located locations in and near urban centres across the metro to enable greater spatial equality.

Although social housing is a legislatively heavy type of housing and very complex, all due processes are being followed to ensure the desired projects can take shape in the shortest possible time. Great strides are being taken to realise the plans for social housing in the city centre. Other planned central and metro-wide projects are also ongoing and on track.

Cape Town City is looking to develop affordable housing opportunities in urban centres across the metro in an inclusive, fair manner. Social housing developments are complex and intricate with a lot of legislative requirements to adhere to before the development can take place.
