Phase 1 Construction Progressing Ahead of Schedule

The new STADIO Higher Education campus in Durbanville, Cape Town, is rapidly taking shape, with Phase 1 on course for completion by mid-2025. The project is being developed by JSE-listed STADIO Holdings and designed by BPAS Architects.

According to Salmon Smith, Senior Architectural Technologist at BPAS, construction is progressing efficiently and remains on track. The appointed contractor, Isipani Construction, has successfully completed the erection of structural columns and casting of floor slabs, marking a key milestone ahead of schedule.

A Visionary Education Hub

Situated in the growing Groot Phesantekraal precinct in the Northern Suburbs, the campus will officially open to students in the 2026 academic year. It will accommodate between 4,000 and 5,000 contact learning students across various faculties, including education, IT, law, media and design, commerce, architecture, and engineering.

“This will be a premier tertiary hub – the first of its kind in the Northern Suburbs,” says Smith. The surrounding precinct is undergoing transformation, with a 30,000m² shopping centre under construction and the proposed Cape Winelands Airport nearby.

Sustainability and Student-Centric Design

Sustainability plays a central role in the campus design, incorporating solar energy solutions and passive design principles to enhance efficiency. It will also feature pedestrian-friendly layouts to promote student well-being.

BPAS has integrated the educational concept of “The Fifth Teacher,” where community plays a vital role in learning, complementing traditional educational environments. “Our design embraces inclusivity, connection, and the belief that students learn from their environment,” adds Smith.
