Protests against the four-day interruption and water disconnections in Khartoum went on Tuesday. Several people blocked traffic in protest of water shortages.
People in Kassala state also lamented about the empty water pipes accusing local authorities of turning a deaf ear towards the pleas of the residents
“Local authorities do not care about the suffering of the residents by the non-operation of the water supply,” a demonstrator from El Goz (Rumaila) told Radio Dabanga.
The residents continued with the demonstration that started on Monday by staging bonfires on the roads to disrupt traffic, in an effort to draw the attention of local authorities and ultimately get them to intervene. The blockade led to chaos as vehicles were held up in a traffic jam for long hours and were forced to change their routes.
Police tried to intervene to calm the situation but protesters against water disconnections in Khartoum stayed put and refused to move from the roads. “We will continue our protest until we receive a response,” the demonstrator said.
Residents in Aroma in eastern parts of Sudan also lamented about the constant disconnections of water in many parts of the town, which has been going for more than two months in some areas.
Consequently, the price of a barrel of water from water tankers now goes for $4.10.
“The drinking water management obliges the residents to pay their water bills, despite the continuous interruption,” an affected resident said. “They received numerous complaints from us,that did not find any response from the officials.”
Lots of people from El Shabiya district in Kassala held demonstrations in front of the government secretariat building in protest of the disconnections of water services without a solution from the responsible authorities in sight. The protestors demanded the authorities to hasten up solving the problem, and pointed to the rise of prices of water from tankers and carts.
