Sutter Health announced plans on Wednesday, February 19 for a $1 billion expansion in the East Bay, including the construction of a new flagship medical campus in Emeryville.
The Sacramento healthcare provider purchased Emery Yards, a 12-acre site at Horton and 53rd Streets that was previously developed by Biomed Realty. The new 1.3 million-square-foot campus will consist of existing structures along with a new medical center constructed on the property. Real estate services firm CBRE, whose brokers are Mike Taquino and Kyle Kovac, handled the sale, which closed Wednesday.
Details of the New Medical Campus
Sutter Health’s new campus will feature two existing buildings at 5555 Hollis St. and 5300 Chiron Way, which will house outpatient services, an emergency department, labor and delivery, an intensive care unit, and administrative space. The vacant plot on the property will also be used for the construction of a 335,000-square-foot medical center.
The new facility, scheduled to open by 2033, will have an initial 200 beds, and labor and delivery, neonatal intensive care, and emergency departments. The layout also provides space for future growth to serve more patients.
A Significant Investment in East Bay Healthcare
“This Sutter Health East Bay expansion represents one of our most significant investments over the next decade,” said Warner Thomas, President and CEO of Sutter Health. “It aligns with our long-term vision to expand access to healthcare services across the East Bay region.”
The campus will also feature 530,000 square feet of outpatient space between the Legoretta building and the new tower at 5555 Hollis Street. Parking space will be in an existing 1,992-space Horton Street garage.
The Emeryville expansion will serve as a replacement for acute care services currently provided at Alta Bates Ashby, a hospital Sutter has been considering closing instead of retrofitting to meet seismic safety requirements.
City Officials Welcome Sutter’s Investment
“We are pleased that Sutter Health selected Emeryville as the location for its new $1 billion flagship medical campus,” stated Emeryville City Manager LaTanya Bellow. “This game-changing development will not only enhance access to healthcare for our residents, but also create new jobs and economic opportunity. Emeryville looks forward to partnering with such a bold vision, which supports our vision for innovation and sustainability.”. We look forward to partnering with Sutter Health to bring this top-tier hospital to our community.”
