Sydney Airport has released its draft Master Plan 2045, outlining the biggest redevelopment of the facility in 25 years to handle a projected 75 percent surge in passengers.

At the heart of the plan is a new integrated terminal merging the T2 and T3 domestic terminals into one precinct. This will allow domestic, regional and international flights to operate under one roof and improve baggage and security systems.

In 2026 another airport in the region the Western Sydney Airport will begin operations and is expected to handle 10 million passseners a year further increasing air traffic into Sydney.

More Gates and Capacity

The upgrade includes 12 new international gates and two additional stands at the T1 International Terminal. Capacity for domestic and regional airlines will also be expanded to meet demand.

Passenger and Freight Growth

By 2045, the airport expects to process 72.6 million travellers annually, up from 41.4 million in 2024. Airfreight volumes are forecast to more than double to 1.4 million tonnes a year, consolidating Sydney’s position as Australia’s main cargo hub.

Jobs and Economic Impact

The redevelopment is predicted to support over 105,000 jobs directly and indirectly, contributing about $70 billion annually to the economy through freight, trade and tourism.

Transport and Sustainability Measures

Plans include expanded kerbside space, more rideshare capacity, upgraded bike and walking links, and a push to remove the train station access fee. Management has pledged net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and aims for airlines to use 50 percent sustainable aviation fuel by 2050.

Community and Environmental Commitment

Sydney Airport says it will manage aircraft noise, work closely with residents and reduce its emissions footprint as the redevelopment progresses.
