Tanzanian lawmakers are calling for faster development of the East African Coast Highway. The highway links Bagamoyo in Tanzania to Malindi in Kenya. Recently, the parliamentary infrastructure committee toured the Tanga, Pangani, and Bagamoyo highway. The government was urged to speed up construction to enhance trade with Kenya. The committee chairman, Selemani Kakoso, said the cross-border road will stimulate economic growth. Furthermore, it will make it easier to transport cargo and tourism, enhancing both nations. The Kenyan section of the highway is almost complete.
However, the Tanzanian section has fallen behind due to financial constraints. Once complete, the East African Coast highway, funded by the African Development Bank, will improve connectivity in the region. It will also take tourists visiting Saadani National Park from Arusha, Tanga, and Dar es Salaam quicker. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan launched the construction works in February last year. It is expected to be part of the East African Coastal Transport Corridor.
