Tanzania’s Kilwa Masoko fishing port is commendably taking shape at 79% completion with significant strides being made. President Suluhu’s four years has seen commendable progress in the construction of the country’s first fishing port. Located in Kilwa Masoko, Lindi region, the port is expected to transform the fishing industry significantly. One of the ways is by boosting deep-sea fishing and improving the livelihoods of fishing communities.
The Chief Spokesperson, Mr. Gerson Msigwa noted that the investment aims to increase production of fishery products. Furthermore, the project is also implementing wharf berths, which are currently 98 percent complete. Once complete, the facility will also have an administration building and a cold storage facility for preserving fish. The government aims that the port will facilitate operation of fishing vessels in Tanzania’s Exclusive Economic Zone and deep sea. Mr. Msigwa also noted that the project is progressing well and once complete it will open numerous economic opportunities.

The significance of Tanzania’s Kilwa Masoko fishing port is unprecedented, with many benefits expected. The Kilwa Masoko fishing port project is expected to drive forward Tanzania’s blue economy agenda. Furthermore, the port is expected to create over 30,000 new job opportunities. Successful implementation will see the port’s capacity handle 60,000 tonnes of fish products annually. This is a vital step in Tanzania’s ambitions to realizing its potential in the deepsea fishing market. Fishermen will be equipped to increase their catch from 1kg to 100kg per day. Moreover, women in the industry will see increased opportunities in seaweed farming. Through this, they would benefit from larger yields and improved economic prospects. The government is also expected to benefit from the annual revenue that would be collected from the port. The sector generates 3.4tri/- per year, growing at a rate of 1.9 per cent and provides direct employment to 230,000 people.
