Gold Fields Ghana engineers have announced that the Tarkwa and Abosso stadium reconstruction is about 80 per cent complete. Even though the project’s completion is scheduled for December, the team acknowledged that it was running behind schedule. Therefore, the project needed to pick up speed before it could be put into operation. However, Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) is paying $16.2 million to fund the project.

Project Manager of Gold Fields Ghana Limited, Mr Roger disclosed the information on Friday, when Member of Parliament for Tarkwa- Nsuaem, Mr George Duker, visited the site to assess the progress of work.

He said outstanding projects like the VVIP parking lot, grassing, and maturation of the pitch needed quality. According to Mr. Adama, the project is on schedule, and the contractors have thus far done an excellent job.

Mr Rogers said, “We are working more quickly and anticipate finishing the project on time by December of this year.”

Components of the Tarkwa and Abosso stadium reconstruction project

Among the works being carried out by Micheletti & Co. Ltd. are a VVIP stand, general spectator and official stands. As well as parking lots, ambulance bay, changing rooms, coaches’ and referees’ offices, a media center, and a commentary box. Other facilities include floodlights, first-aid and physiotherapy office, an office for match commissioners and referees, and a store for uniforms.

Mr. Rogers stated to Mr. Duker that the COVID-19 lockdowns and the necessity of importing steel frames from Vietnam for fabrication delayed the initial works.

Mr Rogers said, “We had to import rocks to fill some areas where we went nearly six meters and more. Budgets undoubtedly soared as we had to backfill, compact, and make sure that we thoroughly test the soil. Our experts, who have a strong commitment to quality assurance and control, are conducting these tests.”

He added, “Gold Fields considers the Tarkwa and Abosso stadium reconstruction to be one of the legacy projects.”
