Network Rail, based in the United Kingdom, has completed track upgrade work at Newcastle Central station. The project cost £4.5 million investment to improve passenger services.
The work included the replacement of the old timber support system with concrete. This is as well as the renewal of 750m of the track to detect track issues and fix them faster and with fewer delays. Furthermore, they included the replacement of overhead line equipment as well as switches and crossings that allow trains to move from one piece of track to another.
“Our teams have worked around the clock to deliver track upgrade work at Newcastle Central station on time,” Network Rail East Coast route director Paul Rutter said. “It’s great to see it finished so that passengers can start reaping the benefits of more reliable journeys.
We apologize for the disruption to people’s plans caused by the work, especially with the strike action thrown in. I’d like to thank everyone for their patience while these significant upgrades were implemented. This ensures that services can continue to run efficiently and smoothly in the future.”

Track upgrade work on the West Coast main line
In addition, Network Rail completed significant work on the West Coast main line. This would allow trains to run at full speed between Coventry and Birmingham International. The £1.4 million investment included the replacement of 650 meters of railway track through the Beechwood tunnel. Work also included the replacement of rails, sleepers, and railway stones known as ballast. This will allow trains to pass through the tunnel at a full line speed of 110mph.
