Uganda has secured $93 million in funding to facilitate the implementation of the Kampala water and infrastructure development project. The funds were provided as development aid from France to significantly improve both water infrastructure and broader urban development in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area. These remarks were noted by Uganda’s finance minister, Matia Kasaija. The loans issued solidify the ongoing partnerships between Uganda and France. Furthermore, they address the critical needs in the rapidly expanding capital region. The signing took place between Mr. Kasaija and AFD Regional Director Jean-Francois Arnal at the Ministry of Finance. The Minister acknowledged the strain on Kampala’s water services due to rapid urbanization and industrial growth. He also noted that water supply services in Kampala and surrounding areas have been constrained. However, he highlighted that despite this, progress was being made through existing collaborations. The scope of implementation entails channeling the funds in various sectors.

The Scope of Implementation on the Kampala Water and Infrastructure Development Project
The total $93 million for implementing the Kampala water and infrastructure development project will be divided into two. $50 million of the total funding will support the second phase of the Kampala Water Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation project. The aim is to expand the water supply network, building upon the previous phase. These entailed the upgrade of the Ggaba water treatment complex and construction of a new treatment plant at Katosi. “This funding will enable us to increase coverage of the intervention and develop the downstream part of the water supply network,” Mr.Kasaija noted.

Furthermore, he noted that it will also enhance access to safe water for residents in the capital. The funds will also facilitate the rehabilitation and extension of the water distribution network in North Kampala. The remaining $43 million will fund the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program. This aims to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs. It aims to ensure coordinated infrastructure services between them and the Kampala Capital City Authority. The portion of the funding will focus on broader urban development needs on water infrastructure and other areas. Once completed, these projects will benefit approximately one million people and include the installation of 2,600 prepaid meters in informal areas.
