The groundbreaking of the UHealth at SoLé Mia medical facility took place recently at the University of Miami, Florida. Although the project got paused during the pandemic, the developers were able to take steps toward planning its future development. Now the university’s non-profit UHealth will begin construction on the 363,000-square-foot facility with support from the Soffer and LeFrak families.
At the event, several guests from UHealth’s Board of Trustees and medical leadership team were in attendance. North Miami’s Mayor, Philippe Bien-Aime also graced the occasion, along with the Miami-Dade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava. The LeFrak family and Jackie Soffer of Turnberry also attended the ceremony.

The new 7-story health facility is being developed within a planned 184-acre mixed-use SoLé Mia development in North Miami. However, the UHealth at SoLé Mia health facility will only occupy about 10 acres of the site. Turnberry Associates and LeFrak partnered to develop the massive SoLé Mia project, which is likely to be completed in 15 years.
Timeline and development plans for UHealth at SoLé Mia
On the other hand UHealth at SoLé Mia, is expected to open by 2025 and also become UHealth’s largest ambulatory facility. Upon completion, the new medical center will feature 110 exam rooms, 33 cancer treatment rooms, and, 10 operating rooms. In addition, the development includes a bridge to a neighboring hotel, a reflection garden, and 100,000 square feet for future expansion. CallisonRTKL designed the facility, while Robins & Morton is serving as the project’s general contractor.
Several specialty programs will also be offered at UHealth at SoLé Mia, which will involve specialists from other centers. Some of these centers include UM’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and Desai Sethi Urology Institute. Additionally, the facility will provide the type of outpatient surgeries where patients can be operated on and discharged within a day.
Dr. Dipen J. Parekh, UHealth’s COO mentioned that UHealth at SoLé Mia would raise the bar for healthcare in the community. He also said the project was in line with the health organization’s mission of advancing medicine and serving more patients.
