US$200m Hector International Airport Expansion project progress

Home » Hector International Airport Showcases Its Progress on Terminal Expansion Project

Construction is progressing at Hector International Airport in Fargo, North Dakota, as part of a $200 million terminal expansion and modernization project. The expansion, approved by the Municipal Airport Authority in June 2022, aims to address surging passenger traffic and aging infrastructure.

The terminal, originally built in 1986 and last significantly upgraded in 2008, has become increasingly strained by record-breaking usage—56,000 passengers in January alone. U.S. Senator John Hoeven toured the site this week, praising the Fargo Airport Authority for their leadership in transforming the facility into a modern regional hub.

Expansion Plans and New Facilities

According to reports, the project includes two main components: an 81,000-square-foot east concourse addition and the renovation of 56,000 square feet of the existing terminal. Upon completion, the number of gates will increase from five to nine, with a host of passenger-focused enhancements including a nursing room, a service animal relief area, a sensory room, and a children’s play area.

Construction began in March 2024 and is expected to take three to four years. A new parking ramp with 972 spaces will open in August 2025.

Funding and Regional Significance

Senator Hoeven is working to secure an additional $31 million in federal funding for the project, on top of the $40 million already allocated. A broader $120 million infrastructure package for airports in Fargo, Grand Forks, and Dickinson is also under consideration by the North Dakota Legislature.
