The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has issued a notice to Flatiron for preconstruction services on its pacific coast highway slope restoration project estimated at US $53m to proceed. The work area is located along California’s famed Highway 1, inside the Point Mugu State Park, 24.1km north of Malibu.

According to Flatiron Vice President and District Manager Ural Yal, they are excited to collaborate with Caltrans District 7 in its first project delivered through the construction manager/ general contractor method. “Our preconstruction team is looking forward to providing value to Caltrans by improving constructability and meeting Caltrans’ schedule and budget goals, while respecting the pristine environment where the project is located,” he said.

Environmental compliance

Project Manager Hunter Bodycott agrees the environment is a top priority while repairing the coastline that has been damaged by past storms and improving its resiliency in the face of projected sea level rise. “The project’s proximity to the ocean and its location within the limits of a state park require a proactive approach to environmental compliance,” said Bodycott.

Preconstruction is currently underway and scheduled to last until late 2021. The project is anticipated to finish in mid-2023.
