The long-awaited replacement for San Pedro’s Ports O’ Call Village waterfront complex, West Harbor, is finally about to start construction. Ratkovich Construction stated that they had obtained finance for the construction of the $155 million first phase. This phase would comprise dining establishments, bars, and retail establishments with views of the busy Port of Los Angeles.

The project will start right now and be completed in 2024, according to Brian Saenger, the CEO of Ratkovich Co. One of the restaurants forming the core of West Harbor will be Yamashiro, the second location of this popular Hollywood spot with a Japanese flair.

King & Queen Cantina, a big restaurant with a Mexican motif and an overwater bar, will also be present. A food court including restaurants, a cafe, and an off-leash dog park bar called Bark Social will also be present. When port officials chose Los Angeles developers Ratkovich Co. and Jerico Development Inc. to rehabilitate the 42-acre site of Ports O’ Call, West Harbor had been planned for more than ten years. The 1960s-era cartoonish recreation of a New England fishing village was demolished in 2018 after decades of disuse.

The port has granted the developers a 66-year lease to construct and run West Harbor. A 6,200-seat amphitheater from its plan is currently the subject of an environmental assessment. Together with music and theatre mogul Nederlander Organization, the facility is being created.

On days when there are no performances, the amphitheater will be open to the public and used to host community activities like exercise classes, outdoor movies, cultural festivities, and lecture series. James Corner Field Operations, the architects and urban designers behind the High Line park in Manhattan and Tongva Park in Santa Monica, put out the West Harbor complex. To accommodate water taxis and day trips by visiting boat owners, port officials have set up courtesy boat slips.
