The construction of Windhoek to Hosea Kutako International Airport Road is set to be completed in 2024 according to Roads Authority CEO Conrad Lutombi. Lutombi made the revelation during the groundbreaking ceremony for the road’s upgrade to dual carriageway standards.

Funded by a N$1.035 billion donation from China to the Namibian government the project which begins at the Dordabis junction and ends at the Hosea Kutako International Airport, includes the construction of 21.3 kilometres of dual-carriageway, three interchanges at Dordabis, Sonnleiten, and Hosea Kutako International Airport, and two river bridges drainage features.

Lutombi emphasized that all building materials will be obtained in Namibia for this phase, leaving the money in Namibia.

Expectations for the Windhoek to Hosea Kutako International Airport Road Project

The Windhoek to Hosea Kutako International Airport Road Project is expected to provide several chances for local small and medium-sized businesses and subcontractors to supply and subcontract specialized tasks.

Generally, the dual carriageway will benefit the economy by facilitating safe transportation, improving Namibia’s investment environment, boosting employment, and offering a stable basis for Namibia’s socio-economic growth. In his remarks, Works Minister John Mutorwa stated that the project is critical to the Namibian government because it promotes the country’s goal of becoming a logistics hub.

At the same time, Yang Jun, Charge d’Affaires at the Chinese embassy, stated that the two nations have grown closer in terms of politics and economics: “Even under the conditions of Covid-19, more and more interactions are taking place. In recent years, China has been the greatest source of foreign direct investment in Namibia and the leading market for Namibian exports “.
