The Dodoma Integrated and Sustainable Transport project (DIST) is taking shape and is expected to transform Tanzania’s capital. The World Bank has pledged a $200 million loan to guarantee its implementation. The money is set to improve roads and public transport, releasing economic opportunities for Dodoma’s rapidly growing population. The city is increasing by 6.4% annually, with nearly a million people as of 2023. The transformation of Dodoma began in 2016 when the late President John Magufuli promoted the relocation of government institutions away from Dar es Salaam.
Since its establishment, Dodoma’s urban area has grown from 11 square kilometers in 2000 to 60 square kilometers in 2024. Though administratively significant, Dodoma’s per capita GDP is lower than Dar es Salaam’s. The World Bank anticipates DIST will benefit more than half of the city’s population and generate 10,000 jobs by 2030. In addition, it will boost Dodoma’s economic production by a minimum of two percent.
