The US$8 Million Chiawa Bridge which is being constructed by China Henan International Cooperation will be ready by June. This was said by RDA Chief Executive Officer Bernerd Chiwala and the Manager for Road Rehabilitation and Maintenance Projects Nicholas Mulenga.
The initial completion date for the project was January 21, 2014 but this did not take place due to several challenges that led to the delay in the project which started in October 2012. Mr. Mulenga mentioned that some of the challenges included the examination process of the rock which the contractor encountered while doing the foundation, removing of ZESCO power lines and compensation of people who had settled on approach roads to Chiawa Bridge.
Chiawa Bridge site is only approximately 120 kilometers south of Lusaka City. People in the area have had to live with challenges of crossing the river since 1965. This project is just one of the projects under Roads Development Agency (RDA)’s Link Zambia 8000 project. This bridge is expected to serve as the main linkage between the Lower Zambezi and Lusaka and is poised to support tourism and agricultural transportation between the two regions.
