A major cement plant in Zimbabwe that was under construction is now nearing completion managing director, Kelibone Masiyane has announced.
Mr Masiyane said that Zimbabwe’s largest and oldest cement manufacturer, Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC) in Harare is now more than 50 percent complete.
He added that one once the plant is completed it will be able to produce 700 000 tonnes of cement per annum when complete, a development that would ensure that PPC remains a key player in the development of infrastructure in Zimbabwe and in neighbouring countries.
This is in line with the South African parent company’s strategy of growing its non-South African revenue from the current 21 percent to at least 40 percent before the end of this year.
Another company official, Sinqobizi Moyo, insisted on written questions which were sent on Tuesday. But Moyo had not responded by the time of going to print.
However, sources at PPC told the Financial Gazette this week that the plant was now 55 percent complete and would be running before the end of the year.
“Civil and structural construction is now more than 50 percent complete,” said one of the sources.
PPC Zimbabwe dominates the domestic cement market alongside Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe, a subsidiary of LafargeHolcim.
