The government of Zambia has provided US $26,344 for the construction of two classroom blocks at Kavalamanja memorial primary school in Zambia. Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Zambia Charity Charamba confirmed the development. The cash was handed over to Zambia’s Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Fredrick Phiri.
Zambia and Zimbabwe relations
Early last year, the Zambia Army took over the running of Kavalamanja Primary School and renamed it Kavalamanja Memorial School. Kavalamanja area is widely known due to the events that took place back in 1978 when the former Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, Ian Smith, bombed the area killing several people that included civilians and soldiers.
The Zimbabwean freedom fighters had their military camps around Kavalamanja area taking advantage of its close proximity to the Zimbabwean border which is separated from Zambia by the Zambezi River. Kavalamanja and Kakaro air raids were part of the campaign to frustrate the efforts by the freedom fighters and the Zambian government’s support to the liberation cause.
Commemorations for that particular event were started by Yezi Arts Promotions chief executive Abdon Yezi in 2008 and since then the activities have continued to be held in honour of the gallant men and women who died during the atrocities.
