The Kitsilano affordable housing project, located at 1807 Larch Street in Vancouver, has officially begun construction. The project is a collaboration between the province, the city of Vancouver, BC Housing, and Jameson Development Corp. When finished, the five-story construction will be an inexpensive, mixed-use structure featuring rental houses for low- to middle-income families. The building will provide studios, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Under the city’s Below-Market Rental Housing Policy, 20% of the apartments will be leased. The remaining apartments will be leased through HousingHub’s Provincial Rental Supply Program for middle-income families. On the fifth level, there will also be indoor and outdoor amenity areas, rooftop access for residents, a kid play area, bike storage, and a dog wash. The project at 1807 Larch St. is expected to be completed and occupied in spring 2023.

Commentary on the Kitsilano affordable housing

“We are thrilled to be a part of this fantastic provincial initiative.” As a family-owned Vancouver-based business, we are devoted to making Vancouver an attractive, affordable, and inclusive place to live. “HousingHub funding allows us to develop these critical houses sooner and at a lower cost for our future inhabitants,” said Tony Pappajohn of Jameson Development Corporation in a statement. “This project is delivering 68 much-needed houses for middle-income people such as hospitality workers, pensioners, and artists, thanks to Vancouver’s unique moderate-income housing program and BC Housing’s financing.” “With partnerships like these, more of our neighbors will be able to stay near to the people and things they care about,” said Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart.

“I support those on city council who are pushing for the Broadway plan to be approved and expanded as soon as possible, as well as extra zoning for more affordable and rental housing around the city and the expediting of housing construction applications that are trapped in the backlog.” Before the situation worsens, people need decisive action that results in shovels in the ground and somewhere to live, and Vancouver has the capacity to lead the way,” said David Eby, Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing.
