As Nakuru’s Bondeni affordable housing project is scheduled to be completed in December 2023, the government’s affordable housing program continues to gain momentum. 45 one-bedroom, 180 two-bedroom, and 380 three-bedroom dwellings will be built as part of the project’s 605 total units.

Charles Hinga, principal secretary for the State Department of Housing, pointed out that the Bondeni project serves as an example of the benefits of working with the private sector. He noted that the units will be sold at the agreed-upon affordable rates since the project’s developer, Kings Sapphire Limited, agreed to take on the risk.

According to Hinga, the government offers the land, as well as the strategic investor provides the designs, funds, and construction project management experience to execute the project. He continued by saying that the State Department has collaborated with a strategic partner, Kings Sapphire Limited.

The PS also revealed that 20% of the apartments were bought by the Civil Servants Housing Scheme, which serves as the anchor tenant in the government-developed affordable housing projects and makes it easier for civil servants to get houses.

The Civil Servants Housing Scheme is taking on the Bondeni-Nakuru AHP project as its second project as part of the program. Additionally, it is the first step into other countries since the objective was to stimulate the establishment of affordable projects around the country.
