OPAL Fuels in partnership with South Jersey Industries (SJI) and the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA), has commenced commercial operations at a new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility located at ACUA’s landfill in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.
The facility captures landfill gas and upgrades it into RNG. The renewable gas provides a low-carbon alternative to diesel and conventional natural gas. With a nameplate capacity of 2,500 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) of raw landfill gas, the plant is expected to produce over 650,000 MMBtu annually. This is equivalent to about 4.6 million gasoline-gallon equivalents (GGE) of RNG.
The project operates as a 50/50 joint venture between OPAL Fuels and SJI. It also marks the first injection of RNG into the South Jersey Gas pipeline system. Additionally, a formal ribbon-cutting event is scheduled for October 2025 to celebrate the commissioning milestone.

ACUA’s RNG Facility and the Garden State
The new facility in New Jersey aligns with both OPAL’s strategy to expand its U.S. RNG production portfolio and SJI’s decarbonization roadmap. RNG from the site will supply local and regional markets through South Jersey Gas’s distribution network. This will also support fleet decarbonization and renewable-fuel standard (RFS) credit generation.
Additionally, OPAL Fuels now has more than 40 RNG projects operational, in construction, or in development in the states. This also goes to strengthen its position as one of the leading vertically integrated developers in the North American RNG sector.
The Atlantic County RNG project also represents a significant advancement in New Jersey’s circular-energy economy. This is in the sense that the facility turns municipal waste emissions into transport-grade renewable fuel and reduces methane emissions from landfills.
Outlook on the RNG Facility in Jersey
The Egg Harbor facility is expected to contribute to regional greenhouse gas reductions and local energy resilience. With commissioning underway, OPAL Fuels and SJI also plans to continue replicating the model across additional landfills in the Mid-Atlantic region as done with the
