Crusoe Data Center Campus in Abilene

Oracle has refuted claims that it has scrapped expansion plans on its $15 billion Crusoe data center campus in Abilene, Texas. The company noted the media coverage of the situation as false and incorrect following a report by Bloomberg. In a post on X, the company clarified that it and the developer Crusoe are “operating in lockstep.” Moreover, it noted they are doing this with the aim of delivering one of the world’s largest data centers at the site.

The post also noted that two buildings are already fully operational and the rest of the campus is on track. Bloomberg had noted that Oracle and OpenAI had abandoned plans to almost double the Abilene facility’s capacity. The scope entailed doubling it from 1.2 gigawatts to roughly 2 gigawatts. The report also noted the abandonment occurred after months of negotiations over financing and OpenAI’s shifting demands forecast.

It also noted that the collapsed talks had opened the dor for Meta to consider leasing the expansion site from Crusoe. Nvidia was also reportedly paying a $150 million deposit to help court Meta as a replacement tenant. Various data center projects are taking shape in Texas such as Aligned data centers DFW-03 campus in Mansfield.

Oracle’s Response to Reports on Cancelled Data Center Expansion Claims

Although Oracle did not directly address the report posted by Bloomberg, it noted such claims to be false and innacurate. It noted, ”…we have completed leasing for the additional 4.5GW to deliver on our commitments to OpenAI. This referenced the broader deal signed in mid-2025 to develop 4.5GW of data center capacity across multiple U.S. locations. “We continuously evaluate sites across the world to meet the growing demand for OCI by working with great partners and customers all the time” the company added.

The Crusoe data center campus in Abilene is among the most visible pieces of the Stargate initiative. It was announced at the White House in January 2025 with President Trump alongside Sam Altman, Masayoshi Son and Larry Ellison. However, the project has been marred by stalled timelines, financing problems, and disagreement between partners over control and ownership. Oracle is building data centers at a steep cost as it piles over $100 billion in debt to fund its AI data center buildout.
