President Trump has ordered for the reconstruction of the White House doomsday bunker, the PEOC, in a secret rebuild. Reports from CNN has noted the decades-old underground facility beneath the East Wing was taken apart as part of plans for the undergoing massive new ballroom. Officials are hinting at a top-secret replacement using modern technology. The nuclear bunker beneath the White House’s East Wing was demolished as part of renovation work ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Since returning to office, the president has made bold reconstruction efforts to leave an indelible mark on the White House. These includes limited projects such as repaving the Rose Garden and installing large flagpoles on the White House lawn. Moreover, his administration launched the far more ambitious ballroom project in October. The planned hall is expected to be even larger than the main White House building.
Scope of Implementation on the White House Doomsday Bunker
According to the report, the demolition extended below ground to the White House doomsday bunker built more than 80 years ago during World War II. The facility’s official name is the Presidential Emergency Operations Center, or PEOC. A source close to the project noted that they are highly confident that all subterranean structures used by the Military Office do not exist. However, the report said the removal of the old bunker does not raise concerns about presidential security. CNN noted that plans for a replacement bunker are being handled with extreme secrecy.
Nonetheless, Trump and senior officials have hinted publicly at a highly classified project underway beneath the White House. “There are some aspects of this project that are of a top-secret nature and are currently underway,” he said. The White House also made similar arguments in a court filing defending the construction, warning that halting the underground work would endanger national security.
In 2020, Trump was reported to have been taken to the facility during unrest following the killing of George Floyd in 2020. While the cost of the new underground facility remains unknown, it is expected to be substantial. Nonetheless, the underground security infrastructure will be paid for by U.S. taxpayers.
