Zublin Company recently deployed 10 of its Liebherr duty cycle crawler cranes to assist in the construction of two road tunnels under the Suez Canal near the city of Port Said in North Egypt.

Züblin AG and Orasom Construction form one group and Trevi S.p.A. forms the second group together with an Egyptian construction company form the two groups that are currently erecting slurry walls that cover a total area of 520 000 square metres.

The work on the slurry walls started in September 2015 and, according to actual information, should be completed by June 2017.

The companies involved in the construction work are using a total of nine duty cycle crawler cranes and one crawler crane from Liebherr. These are inclusive of four HS 885 HD, two HS 875 HD, one HS 855 HD, one HS 845 HD as well as one crawler crane type LR 1160.

Furthermore, Züblin is setting out a HS 8100 HD. The entire set- up therefore, will involve a duty cycle 2 / 3 crawler crane of the newest generation, which is equipped with a hydraulic slurry wall grab from Leffer.

The duty cycle crawler crane impresses, due to its excellent level of working safety thanks to additional walkways and ladders as well as optimized hydraulics and the Eco-Silent Mode, which has greater efficiency under tough jobsite conditions and helps reduce the motor’s speed to a required predefined level.

This leads to a considerable reduction in the fuel consumption, and at the same time, a reduction in noise emission.

The construction of the tunnels is part of an Egyptian infrastructure project with vast scope. New tunnels will also be built further south at Ismailia.

The project also comprises the widening and deepening of the existing shipping lane of the canal, as well as the construction of a completely new lane with a length of approximately 35 km in the northern section. The total investment volume amounts to approximately $4Bn.
