A person is entitled to be registered as a Structural Engineer by the Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE) if, he or she, having attained the prescribed academic qualifications in Civil Engineering, and after having acquired the necessary post graduate Structural Engineering experience for a minimum period of three years, sits for and passes the 7-hour part III examination of the Institution.
Well over ten years ago, the Council of the NSE gave its nod to the proposal for the NIStructE to handle its unique 7 hours Part III Examinations to determine those who must be called Structural Engineers in Nigeria.
It was an accepted fact at that time that it could really not have been otherwise, since it is only the body of Structural Engineers, as represented by NIStructE that can truly decide how best the new entrants into the profession can be tested as opposed to the simplistic practice, then, of just hand-picking Structural Engineers.
Foreign structural engineers
Non Nigerian Structural Engineers are entitled to be registered as Structural Engineers by the Institution if after meeting all the prescribed Academic, Moral, and Legal qualifications are successful at the Professional Interview of the Institution.
The practice of structural engineering in Nigeria
Only qualified and duly registered Structural Engineers are expected to practice the Structural Engineering profession in Nigeria for safety, economy, durability and quality service delivery. To do otherwise is to continue to fertilize the growth of mediocres in the profession and the consequences are economically expensive and psychologically excruciating, the collapse of buildings is just one of such consequences.
Professional competence
The Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE) has a robust list of Structural Engineers of ‘World-Class’. One of our past presidents, Engr. Ike Chukwuneke, designed and supervised the construction of the largest auditorium in the world. Another of our members, Engr. Onaeko, designed the Ijebu-Ode Stadium and Engr. Oyenuga designed the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
These two stadia were used in the last U-17 FIFA World Cup, tagged Nigeria 2009. We have the capacity and capability to render International Standard Structural Engineering Services to the benefit of our people and our great Nation, Nigeria.
