The Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers covers all engineering aspects in Zimbabwe. An Act in Parliament regulates its operation and membership. However ZIE is a private body consisting of all  its members.
Founding of the Institution was in 1944. Hence the name the  Society of Engineers in 1944. It then received legal status as an Institution in 1952. A policy-making Board consisting of members representing all grades of its own ranks governs the institution. Additionally the Board runs the institution using executive committees – Finance and Staff Committee , Learned Society,  Professional, Education and Qualifications, Executive,  and Membership Services.
The Institution organizes a national congress every 2 years. Usually other engineering institutions receive invites to participate . An outstanding professional engineer from Zimbabwe or outside the country also normally  receives an invite. He or she normally delivers a public lecture in memory of the first President of the Institution(ZIE).
Purpose of the Institution
- To ensure correct standards of professional conduct and ethics
- Promote the advancement of Engineering and facilitate the transfer and dissemination of Engineering knowledge.
- Set and maintain appropriate standards of Engineering and technician competence.
- Raise the character and status of the profession and also  promote public awareness and confidence in it.
