Engineering students and professionals looking for a good foundation for their engineering practice should join the Ghana Institution of Engineers.
Student members derive benefits and opportunities such as access to GhIE publications as well as being able to publish in them. Moreover, they are free to mingle with professionals in the field while enjoying the perks of asking for assistance in their project work.
On the other hand, other than the provision of a foundation on which they are able to build their future careers on, the students can as well benefit from international links with other engineering bodies.
GhIE comprises of two classes, corporate and non-corporate classes. The former is divided into the fellows and members, the latter made up of honorary fellows, companions, graduate members, associates, affiliates, technicians and students respectively.
In the case of Fellows, admission shall only be by transfer from the class of Member. Furthermore, every candidate for transfer to the class of Fellow shall be a person who at the time of the application is, or has been engaged, in a position of superior responsibility for at least ten years in the science and practice of engineering and who, in the opinion of the Council, has by personal attainments acquired an established reputation as an engineer and whose admission as Fellow will be in the interest of the Institution.
An addition requirement is having been a member of the institution for at least 12 years.
Below are the requirements for the different memberships in the association;
Members
Every candidate for election or transfer to the class of Member shall be a person who at the time of the application is engaged in a position of responsibility in the science and practice of engineering and who, in the opinion of the Council has by personal attainments acquired an established reputation as an Engineer and whose admission as a Member will be in the interest of the Institution.
โข Have at least Two year practical training as an Engineer of a nature acceptable to the Council and shall have had such experience of not less than one additional year in a position involving responsibility as an Engineer
โข Hold either a University Degree, or accredited equivalent, approved for the purpose by the Council or hold a recognized Diploma, other Awards of a School of Engineering, or a recognized accredited equivalent approved by the Council
โข Be a Graduate Member, or be of such other class of membership of a recognized Engineering Institution approved for this purpose by the Council, and furthermore, the candidate.
โข Satisfy the Council at a Professional Examinations level conducted
Any candidate who is a member of a recognized Engineering Institution or be of such other class of membership as the Council shall claim exemption to satisfy the Council at a Professional examinations conducted in that behalf.
Honorary fellows
Every candidate for election to the class of Honorary Fellows shall be a person who satisfies the Council that he or she has rendered important service to engineering in any of the fields of science, production, management, commerce, finance and law, or is so connected with the application of engineering science or practice that admission of the candidate as Honorary Fellow would, in the opinion of the Council, be in the interest of the Institution.
Companions
โข Every candidate for the election to the class of Companion shall be an established member of another profession who is associated with the methods, procedures or practices of engineering activities, and whose admission would be conducive to the general advancement of engineering and its applications.
โข Five years association with the methods, procedures or practices of engineering activities, with experience and responsibility allied to those of a Corporate Member.
โข University Degree, or an accredited equivalent approved by the Council, or hold a recognized Diploma, other Awards of a University or their accredited equivalents approved by the Council.
Graduate members
โข University Degree, a University Diploma or other Awards of a School of Engineering or other accredited equivalents, or be a Graduate Member or any other class of membership, of a recognized Engineering Institution approved for this purpose by the Council on reciprocal basis.
Associates
โข Diploma of a School of Engineering or its accredited equivalent approved by the Council
โข At least three years training and experience in engineering practice
โข Satisfy the Council at a Professional Examination conducted
โข Be an Associate or be of such other class of membership of a recognized Engineering Institution approved for the purpose by the Council.
โข Be an Affiliate or be of such other class of membership of a recognized Engineering Institution approved for the purpose by the Council
โข Minimum of three years post-qualification experience and training
โข Satisfy the Council at a Professional Examination conducted
Affiliates
โข Diploma of a School of Engineering or its accredited equivalent approved by the Council;
โข Be an Affiliate or be of such other class of membership of a recognized Engineering Institution approved for the purpose by the Council.
โข Be a Technician or be of such other class of of a recognized Engineering Institution approved for the purpose by the
โข Minimum of six years post-qualification training and experience in engineering practice
โข Satisfy the Council at an Examination conducted
Technicians
โข A City and Guildโs Engineering Part III Certificate or accredited equivalents approved for this purpose by the Council.
โข Be a Technician or such other class of a recognized Engineering Institution approved for this purpose by the Council on reciprocal basis.
โข Hold a technical position in Industry or the Utilities for at least twelve years during which period the candidate shall have had practical training and accredited training which shall satisfy the Council at an interview conducted in that behalf.
Students
Every candidate for election as a Student shall be registered in a school of Engineering and shall satisfy the Council that the candidate is being educated and/or receiving training in engineering science and intends to adopt the profession of engineering.
Temporary membership
Temporary Membership in all the classes may be granted to candidates who do not intend to practice in Ghana for more than twelve (12) calendar months. These candidates shall be members of good standing in the class they apply for, in an approved Engineering Institution in their countries of Abode. Evidence of their membership shall be verified by Council.
