Deloitte East Africa has released a report showing that China is responsible for building 31% of all infrastructure projects in East Africa in 2014. This went up as compared to the 19% in 2013.
The report was recently released during the third edition of the annual Deloitte African Construction Trends Report 2014 and it stated that Europe and the United States contributed 18% of construction, followed by the government at 13 percent.
Out of the ten East African countries namely Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia, Kenya emerged to be the one with most infrastructure projects in 2014 followed by Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Rwanda respectively.
In Kenya, the transport sector dominated with a 59% share while energy and power capacity projects constituted 37 percent.
Some of the mega developments in Kenya that highly contributed to the 59 percent are projects like the Standard Gauge Railway by China Road and Bridge Corporation, Lamu Port construction, Southern Sudan, and Ethiopia Transport Corridor Project (LAPSSET), Konza Techno City, Olkaria Geothermal power projects, Lamu Coal Power plant among others.
The report concluded by saying that in the whole continent, the Southern Africa region made the highest contribution in the number of projects, catering for 46 percent valued at US$ 145bn followed by West Africa, East Africa, Central Africa and North Africa.
