Construction of the Nairobi Southern Bypass is slated for completion by Thursday next week; this is according to The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the government body responsible for construction and supervision of the country’s highway.
Kenya National Highway Authority confirmed the reports in a statement adding that the construction of the Nairobi Southern Bypass had previously been experiencing some challenges due to delays in the acquisition of land along the Nairobi national Park which was settled.
“The main purpose of the initiative of the Southern bypass was meant to allow for passage with very little interference from Mombasa Road to Gitaru and hence minimize interruptions, there will be no access to the bypass except via any of the five interchanges,” the statement said.
The reports further said that the project is currently 98 per cent complete and the contractor is doing the final touches for operations to commence.

The company that was chosen to design and construct the project was China Road and Bridge Corporation, selected by the Kenyan government through KeNHA and the works have been carried out through an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) Contract consisting of the construction of dual carriageway with a length of 28.6kilometres.
The Bypass starts from the Mombasa Road junction junction and ends at the Kabete- Limuru Road in Kikuyu town and the design speed for the bypass will be 100kph for through traffic. The road also crosses the National Park from the west and then goes through Lang’ata Road, Ngong Road Motoine River, Dagoretti Road, Thogoto Road over River Ondiri and a railway line that heads to Kikuyu town.
This mega development project is partially funded by the Kenyan Government through a partnership with China’s EXIM Bank at a cost of US$ 178m.
