President Ernest Bai Koroma has officially commissioned the new modern municipal stadium in Bo. This was unveiled on Friday 25th April at a ceremony held along the Kenema highway, in Bo.
The newly constructed stadium can only accommodate 4,000 people. However, the government intends to upgrade it to 20,000 seats. The stadium was constructed at a cost of US$10million, mainly for the purpose of training, but it will also be used for football, athletics and other sporting and social events.
The largest stadium in Sierra Leone is the Brookfields National Stadium with a capacity of 45,000 seats, making the Bo stadium ranked second. It was Built in 1980 as Siaka Stevens Stadium (named after the President), the name was changed in 1992. It is located in the capital city of Freetown; it is mostly used for football matches and has athletics facilities. It also serves as a venue for social, cultural, and religious events.
The discussions surrounding the construction of the Bo stadium started in 2003 between the government of Sierra Leone and the Chinese government. The construction of the stadium started on the 25th of December 2008 and was completed on the 25th of December 2013.
It was built by Xinjiang Beixin Construction and Engineering Group Company Limited, who on Friday 11th April, handed over the stadium to the government through the Ministry of Sports. The company is a large scale State-owned multi-enterprise group which consists of scientific research, design, construction, industrial installation, real estate development, building material production, trading and logistic distribution.
