With ongoing developments in the Umhlanga Ridge and Umhlanga area in the north of Durban, sewage flows to the existing Ohlanga Sewage Pump Station are increasing.
The existing Ohlanga Sewage Pump Station which has a capacity of 12 Ml/day is becoming overloaded resulting in the above project, which comprises construction of a new 12 Ml/day pump station, (including the supply and installation of pumps, pipework and motor control centres) , rising main and gravity outfall sewer.
The existing Ohlanga Sewage Pump Station pumps sewage to another existing pump station – Waterloo Sewage Pump Station – which in turn pumps sewage to the Phoenix Wastewater Treatment Works.
The new Ohlanga Outfall Sewer will bypass the Waterloo Sewage Pump Station and will discharge direct to the Phoenix Wastewater Treatment Works thereby reducing the load on the Waterloo Sewage Pump station.
Glen Millar Surveys carried out the earthworks and positions and levels of the manholes on the project
The sewer Outfall comprises 6.2 km of 1250 mm Ø HDPE pipe and 1.33 km of elevated 1350 mm Ø concrete pipe. The rising main is 1.01 km long and is a 560 mm Ø HDPE pipe.
Construction commenced on 8 February 2010 and the contract period is 24 months. The tender price was R 82,834,185 .97
