RWE Nordseecluster A wind farm PPA with Munich Airport

Germany’s renewable energy major RWE has signed a long-term corporate power purchase agreement (PPA) with Munich Airport for electricity generated by the Nordseecluster A offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. The agreement will supply 40 GWh of renewable electricity annually over a 10-year period. This is in a bid to support Munich Airport’s decarbonization strategy as it prepares to open the new Terminal 1 Pier on 13 April 2026. The power purchase agreement is also seen as RWE’s way of expanding its offshore wind energy corporate supply in Germany.

Nordseecluster A offshore wind farm is part of the larger Nordseecluster wind project currently under construction about 50 km north of the island of Juist. The wind farm will have an installed capacity of approximately 660 MW and is expected to enter commercial operation in early 2027.

Overview on Nordseecluster development

The Nordseecluster development is one of the largest offshore wind projects currently underway in the German North Sea. The project is being built in two phases – Nordseecluster A and B – with a combined capacity of 1.6 GW.

Nordseecluster A consists of two wind farm sites, N-3.7 and N-3.8. The wind sites have a combined capacity of 660 MW, while Nordseecluster B will add 900 MW to the capacity. This brings the total cluster capacity to over 1.5 GW once fully operational by the end of the decade.

Once complete, the Nordseecluster project is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power around 1.6 million households in Germany. This clean energy capacity will contribute significantly to the Germany’s offshore wind expansion and energy transition goals.

RWE and Munich Airport in corporate PPA

Corporate PPAs have become an increasingly important mechanism for financing large renewable projects in Europe. Long-term electricity supply agreements with corporate buyers such as airports, tech companies and industrial manufacturers not only serve those on the receivers end but also the energy sellers. The PPAs help renewable developers secure predictable revenue streams while reducing reliance on wholesale electricity markets.

For Munich Airport, the wind PPA with RWE is also an important stride in its sustainability program. The international airport aims to reduce operational emissions and increase the share of renewable electricity powering airport infrastructure, including terminals, lighting, and ground operations.

Financing for Munich Airport PPA and RWE Nordseecluster A wind farm

The Munich Airport agreement is structured as a corporate renewable PPA with the following key parameters:

  • Contract duration: 10 years
  • Annual renewable electricity supply: 40 GWh
  • Generation source: Nordseecluster A offshore wind farm
  • Commercial structure: Corporate PPA between RWE Supply & Trading and Munich Airport
  • Revenue model: Long-term contracted power sales supporting offshore wind project financing

The Nordseecluster offshore wind development itself represents a multi-billion-euro investment financed through a combination of developer equity and institutional investment.

Ownership of the project is split between:

  • RWE with 51% stake and also serves as project operator
  • Norges Bank Investment Management as 49% equity partner
