A consortium formed by Moroccan construction giants SGTM (Société Générale des Travaux du Maroc) and TGCC (Travaux Généraux de Construction de Casablanca) has officially secured the contract to build the new terminal at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca. The deal, valued at nearly 12 billion Moroccan dirhams (approximately $1.29 billion), was awarded following an international call for tenders initiated by the National Airports Office (ONDA). This massive infrastructure project is a cornerstone of Morocco’s “Airports 2030” strategy, designed to modernize the country’s aviation capabilities ahead of co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. The contract will be executed on a 50/50 basis between the two firms. Further, leveraging their combined expertise in delivering large-scale national projects.

A New Era for Casablanca’s Air Hub

The new terminal is set to transform Mohammed V Airport into a world-class intercontinental hub, significantly boosting its annual passenger capacity. While current estimates place the airport’s capacity at around 15 million passengers, the expansion aims to accommodate an additional 20 million travelers. Furthermore, increasing the total capacity to 35 million passengers annually by 2030. The terminal’s design, inspired by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, features an innovative “H”-shaped layout that optimizes operational flow and passenger experience. It will be equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, including automated baggage handling systems and advanced passenger flow management tools. Crucially, the terminal will integrate seamlessly with Morocco’s high-speed rail network (Al Boraq). Further, providing direct connectivity to major cities like Tangier and Marrakech, with travel times to Rabat cut to just 30 minutes.

Strategic National Infrastructure

This project represents one of the most significant investments in Morocco’s transport sector, aligning with the broader goal of positioning the Kingdom as a key logistical and tourism gateway between Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The SGTM-TGCC consortium’s selection underscores the capability of domestic firms to lead international-standard megaprojects. Both companies have a proven track record, having previously collaborated on high-profile developments such as the Grand Stadium of Benslimane. The construction timeline is ambitious, with completion targeted for 2029 to ensure readiness for the World Cup. Beyond the terminal building itself, the project scope includes a new runway and air traffic control tower. Additionally, an extensive external engineering works, all designed to meet the highest standards of sustainability and energy efficiency.

Impact on Moroccan Aviation and Economy

The expansion of Mohammed V Airport is expected to have a profound economic impact. It will create thousands of jobs during the construction phase and foster long-term employment in the aviation and service sectors—part of a broader infrastructure push that also sees Morocco’s King Mohammed VI launching $2 billion in Casablanca rail projects. It also supports the growth trajectory of the national carrier, Royal Air Maroc, which plans to quadruple its fleet by 2037 to serve a wider global network. By enhancing connectivity and service quality, the new terminal will bolster Morocco’s attractiveness as a tourism destination and a business hub. The project is part of a larger $4.2 billion investment plan by ONDA to upgrade airport infrastructure across the country. Further, ensuring that Morocco’s air transport network is resilient, efficient, and capable of handling future demand.
