French water and environmental services giant SUEZ has secured a €2 billion (US$2.28 billion) contract to operate and maintain water and wastewater services across key regions of Oman. The 15-year agreement is the company’s largest-ever contract in the Middle East and represents a major step in Oman’s long-term strategy to modernize its water infrastructure while strengthening service reliability and sustainability. The announcement also coincided with the official state visit of Haitham bin Tarik to France. During the visit, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in infrastructure, water security and energy.

The €2 Billion SUEZ Water Management Contract and Oman Vision 2040

The contract was awarded by Nama Water Services in partnership with Omani firms National Trading Company and National Energy Center. It covers the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems serving Muscat as well as the North Sharqiyah and South Sharqiyah governorates, benefiting approximately 2.3 million residents.

Under the agreement, SUEZ will deploy its digital water management technologies and operational expertise to improve efficiency and cut losses. Also in the contract is the enhancement of customer services across the utility network.

The $2 billion award to SUEZ for water management systems also reinforces Oman’s broader investment drive into critical infrastructure. The country has recently increased its spending on industrial, energy, logistics and utility projects aimed at supporting economic diversification under Oman Vision 2040. Water security has also become an increasingly important pillar of that strategy as urbanization, industrial expansion and climate pressures continue to increase demand for reliable water services.

What Does the €2 Billion SUEZ Water Management Contract in Oman Cover

The contract includes:

  • Operation and maintenance of drinking water distribution systems.
  • Wastewater collection and management services.
  • Digital monitoring and optimization of network performance.
  • Asset maintenance and operational efficiency improvements.
  • Customer service enhancement across the covered regions.

According to SUEZ, the project aims to reduce water losses from approximately 34% today to around 11% by 2040. This is expected to significantly improve network efficiency while supporting Oman’s sustainability objectives.

Finance Structure

The agreement is valued at €2 billion (US$2.28 billion) under a duration of 15 years.

The long-term service contract also represents one of the largest utility operation agreements awarded in the Gulf region. It also marks SUEZ’s biggest project in the Middle East to date.

What the €2 Billion SUEZ Water Management Contract Holds for Oman

The water management project strengthens SUEZ’s already significant presence across the Middle East. The French company has developed desalination plants, wastewater treatment facilities and digital water management systems over the past decade.

For Oman, the agreement supports national efforts to improve operational efficiency and reduce non-revenue water. It also helps build resilient infrastructure capable of serving growing urban populations over the coming decades. This goal is also demonstrated by other water infrastructure projects in the country including the Barka 5 Independent Water Project utilizing reverse osmosis seawater desalination technology.
