Mwanza–Isaka SGR Project continues to advance steadily as Tanzania pushes forward with its standard gauge railway expansion, with construction progress now approaching the final stages following earlier reports of 63% completion, reflecting sustained momentum across the Lake Zone corridor and reinforcing its strategic role in regional rail connectivity.
Mwanza–Isaka SGR Project construction progress update (2026)
Construction of the Mwanza–Isaka SGR Project reached 63.04% completion in early 2025, with major civil works significantly advanced. However, more recent updates indicate progress has risen to approximately 68% as of early 2026.
Additionally, embankment works surpassed 89%, while bridge and culvert construction exceeded 70%, demonstrating strong execution progress. Track laying, station construction, and installation of electrical infrastructure are also ongoing across multiple sections. Despite earlier weather-related disruptions, authorities have accelerated construction activities to maintain delivery timelines. Consequently, the project remains on track to support full corridor operations targeted toward the late-decade timeline.
Mwanza–Isaka SGR Project scope and regional integration
The Mwanza–Isaka SGR Project spans approximately 341 kilometres, forming a key segment of Tanzania’s broader 2,000 km standard gauge railway network. Importantly, the line links the Lake Zone to the central corridor and onward to the Port of Dar es Salaam. This connection enhances cargo movement efficiency and reduces transport costs for bulk goods.
Furthermore, the railway is designed to integrate with regional networks connecting Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. As a result, the project strengthens Tanzania’s position as a regional logistics hub in East and Central Africa. Meanwhile, parallel developments across the region continue to reinforce railway expansion momentum, as seen in Uganda’s financing shift under the $3.19 billion Uganda Standard Gauge Railway Project.
Mwanza–Isaka SGR Project outlook and delivery timeline
The Mwanza–Isaka SGR Project is expected to play a central role in improving freight and passenger transport efficiency. Notably, the project will reduce reliance on road transport while lowering logistics costs across the Lake Zone. Additionally, it will unlock economic opportunities by facilitating trade between inland regions and coastal ports.
Government authorities continue to prioritise timely completion through close contractor monitoring and improved logistics coordination. Looking ahead, full integration into Tanzania’s national SGR network will further enhance cross-border connectivity. Ultimately, the project’s successful completion will contribute significantly to regional economic growth and infrastructure modernisation.

Significance of the Project
Upon the SGR section completion, this project is expected to bring major economic benefits especially to the Lake Region zones. The government is dedicated to ensure the project is completed faster so that it can start serving citizens.

According to the project manager Moga Kulwa, the construction works of the project are going on well. Only minor tasks such as installation of railway loopers are left.
Challenges Facing the Project
The Tanzanian Railway Corporation (TRC) Director General Masanja Kadogosa, stated that the construction works on the project were halted temporarily. This was due to the ongoing heavy rains in the region. He also revealed that proper arrangements are currently underway to ensure that the construction works resume on April at an accelerated pace.
The SGR project covers a total of 249 kilometres of the main railway line. Furthermore, it consists of 92 kilometres of passing loops.
The SGR project is being implemented through a collaboration between China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and CRCC. Its cost is approximately $1.321 billion and is expected to unlock economic opportunities by boosting the transportation of goods from the Lake Zone to the Port of Dar es Salaam.
