The Six Major Long-Duration Battery Projects in Latest NSW Round 6 Tender: All to Know

Six battery storage projects have secured Long-Term Energy Service Agreements (LTESAs) in Round 6 Tender conducted by AusEnergy Services on behalf of the NSW Government. The projects add approximately 1.8 GW of capacity and nearly 12 GWh of long-duration storage to the state’s energy infrastructure.

1. Great Western Battery: The Largest of Latest NSW Tender 6 Projects

The Great Western Battery project, to be developed by Neoen Australia, is the largest long-duration battery awarded in the NSW tender, sized at 330 MW with about 3,500 MWh of storage capacity. This is enough to deliver more than 10 hours of energy dispatch. Located near Wallerawang, close to Lithgow, the project will play a key role in grid reliability as NSW transitions from thermal generation. Great Western Battery will provide frequency control, load shifting and extended renewable firming services. Once commissioned, it is expected to be the largest battery in Australia under long-duration storage contracts.

2. Bannaby Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

The Bannaby Battery, awarded to BW ESS Australia, is a 233 MW/2,676 MWh long-duration battery in the Southern Tablelands of NSW. With a storage duration exceeding 11 hours, Bannaby is designed to absorb excess renewable generation and discharge electricity during peak demand periods. This enhances grid stability in the region. Its extended duration also helps ensure that usable capacity remains at eight-plus hours over the 14-year contract life, even with battery degradation over time.

3. Bowmans Creek Battery Energy Storage System

Situated in the Upper Hunter region and developed by Ark Energy Australia, the Bowmans Creek Battery project will deliver 250 MW of power with 2,414 MWh of storage capacity. With a nominal duration of around 9.7 hours, it will also support the integration of variable renewable generation. The BESS project will also provide important grid services such as energy shifting, frequency control and contingency reserves.

4. Armidale East Battery Energy Storage System

Armidale East Battery, developed by FRV Services Australia, is another long-duration project selected under NSW tender 6 battery projects. The project is sized at 158 MW/1,440 MWh. This puts its nominal duration value at about 9.1 hours. Located east of Armidale, this project is also part of a wider clean energy transition in the New England region, where battery storage continues to reinforce renewable generation.

Local economic development is also central to the project through construction and operation opportunities. Additionally, developer FRV’s broader plans for the site include connecting to the existing high-voltage transmission infrastructure while engaging local supply chains during construction.

5. Kingswood Battery Energy Storage System

Kingswood Battery, backed by Iberdrola Australia, will be built near Tamworth. It will deliver 100 MW of power and 1,080 MWh of storage capacity with a nominal duration of about 10.8 hours. The Iberdrola-backed project also shows how modular battery installations can be used to provide energy storage that supports renewable generation. This is while addressing peak demand response and other grid-support functions in NSW.

6. Ebor Battery Energy Storage System

Ebor Battery is being developed by Bridge Energy with a contract option for Energy Vault technology. It is sized at 100 MW/870 MWh, and will providing around 8.7 hours of energy duration. Located close to Armidale, Ebor will also contribute to the overall storage capacity contracted under the NSW Roadmap. The project is expected to utilize innovative battery management and dispatch technologies. These will be used to optimize performance of the battery storage installation.

Outlook on the Projects Awarded Under NSW Round 6 Battery Tender

The tender also exceeded its original target of 1 GW/8 GWh. Additionally, the contracted projects are expected to be completed before 2030. This will help NSW meet its legislated storage goals and improve grid reliability as renewable penetration rises and traditional generation retires. Also noteworthy is that the competitive tender drew the attention of a diverse set of bidders, both international and domestic.
