South Africa’s renewable energy sector has reached another milestone with the Springbok Solar Farm achieving its Commercial Operation Date (COD). The 150 MW solar project, developed by Revego Fund Managers (RFM) in partnership with SOLA Group, is located in the Free State province and represents a breakthrough in corporate energy supply across Africa.

A New Model for Corporate Clean Energy Supply

The Springbok Solar Farm is Africa’s first multi-buyer solar project, designed to supply power to multiple corporate off-takers through South Africa’s national grid. This innovative structure allows large companies to access clean, affordable energy through both long-term anchor contracts and shorter, flexible agreements.

Major energy buyers include Amazon, Sibanye Stillwater, AB InBev, Vodacom, Sasol, Rio Tinto, Afrimat, Redefine, Old Mutual, and BRM Brands. The project marks a significant evolution from the traditional single off-taker model, promoting a diverse and resilient renewable energy ecosystem.

Driving South Africa’s Clean Energy Future

Revego Fund Managers, a majority black-owned investment firm, focuses on renewable energy projects across sub-Saharan Africa. Its portfolio also includes the Khobab and Loeriesfontein Wind Farms (140 MW each) and the 100 MW Kathu Solar Park in the Northern Cape.

SOLA Group highlighted the project as a major step in advancing energy wheeling and expanding clean energy access for businesses. SOLA Group can boast of having developed the largest wheeling project to date in South Africa .
