As of 2025, a new wave of hyperscale and AI-ready data center campuses are reshaping Europe’s tech landscape with billion-dollar builds across Sweden, Norway, and the UK emerging as one of the continent’s largest. Here, we feature the top 3 largest data center projects in Europe.
Below are three of Europe’s most ambitious data center developments, each standing out, in its own light, for size, investment, and impact on AI and cloud infrastructure.
1. Brookfield AI Data Center Campus in Strangnas, Sweden
Location: Strangnas, about 60 km west of Stockholm in Sweden.
Investment Value: Up to SEK 95 billion. This is about US$ 10 billion.
Capacity: To support up to 750 MW IT load. Initial capacity target set at 300 MW.
Land Area: Campus size 3.77 million sq ft. Also has 350,000 m2 extra land allocation.
Project Timeline: Announced in June 2025. Data center construction expected to last 10 to 15 years.
2. DC01UK: The 85-acre Data Center Campus in Hertfordshire
Location: South Mimms, Hertsmere Borough in UK. Site is adjacent to A1 and M25 areas.
Investment: £3.75 billion, about US$4.6 billion.
Capacity: Up to 2 million sq ft of floor space. Also has power reservation of 400 MVA from National Grid.
Construction Jobs: About 3,000 during construction peak plus 200 more permanent jobs post-build.
Timeline: Planning approval obtained January 2025. Start of operational expected in 2029.
US firm, Equinix, also recently announced a £4 billion investment to develop a data center campus on the site previously proposed for the DC01UK data center project in Hertfordshire, England.
3. Stargate Norway AI Data Center in Northern Norway by OpenAI, Aker and Nscale Global
Location: Kvandal, just outside Narvik, Northern Norway.
Investment: USD 1 billion
Capacity: Initial phase target set at 230 MW, with 290 MW additional capacity. Total capacity will stand at 520 MW.
Key Feature: Powered entirely by renewable hydropower. Will also have 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs by end of 2026. Also features advanced cooling with direct-to-chip liquid and reuse of excess heat.
Timeline: Announced in July 2025. Operations start set for 2026.

Outlook on the Top 3 Largest Data Center Projects in Europe
The top 3 largest data center projects in Europe reflect of the region’s scale up of technology infrastructure to meet increasing AI, cloud, and compute demand.
The Swedish and Norwegian sites also arguably point out to quality compute power, renewable energy access, and AI centered infrastructure. This marks a shift from traditional colocation data centers to truly hyperscale and AI optimized campuses.
UK’s Hertfordshire project also highlights how major campuses are being designed with significant scale as this one has both IT load and floor area. Other features include the power reservation, connectivity, and green space – though concerns raised against the project include the Green belt site dilemma.
