The historic center of Isola della Scala has taken a significant step forward with the completion of the new public lighting system in Piazza Martiri della Libertà and the main access roads. Designed by KM429 Architettura and bc studio, in collaboration with QU, specialists in advanced lighting solutions, the project aims to restore the central square’s recognizability, enhance spatial quality, and generate a “cascade effect” throughout the historic center.
By improving lighting, the initiative encourages pedestrianization, social interaction, and cultural and commercial activity, while reconnecting the historic abbey buildings and the War Memorial to restore visual continuity across the urban space.
Design Concept: Lighting as a Core Architectural Element
The design team treated lighting as more than functionality — it became a true design material, integrated into the urban landscape like stone or furniture. The new system was conceived to enhance the square’s aesthetic and spatial identity, guiding pedestrian flows and reinforcing the square’s role as a social and cultural hub.
“Lighting fits into the urban space with discretion and elegance, like people in dialogue with each other,” the designers explain, emphasizing the importance of blending technology, functionality, and aesthetic harmony.
Custom Solutions: Cyrano Lighting Poles
To meet the project’s architectural and regulatory requirements, QU developed custom lighting poles based on the Cyrano model, part of the Arcipelago Capsule Collection designed by Parisotto + Formenton Architetti.
Key features include:
- Cyrano Paletto and Cyrano Big: A versatile range for indoor and outdoor applications.
- Materials & Finish: Aluminum construction with IP-rated protection, Corten coating for visual consistency with surrounding street furniture, and optional bespoke finishes.
- Pole Versions for Isola della Scala: Heights ranging from 4 to 6 meters, with certified optics compliant with Veneto regional regulations.
This custom approach allowed catalogue elements to be adapted perfectly to the architectural concept, demonstrating QU’s flexibility and commitment to collaborative design.
