The world’s largest integrated green hydrogen-ammonia-methanol project has officially began operations in Songyuan. The project is located in Northeast China’s Jilin Province. The project has is expected to be a key breakthrough in further strengthening China’s ability to manage renewable energy supply. Furthermore, it enables continuous and stable chemical production while offering a model for global commercialization of green hydrogen. It is known as the China Energy Engineering Group Songyuan Hydrogen Energy Industrial Park Phase I. Additionally, its implementation was made possible through an investment from China Energy Engineering Corp (Energy China).

The plant will have an annual output of 45,000 tons of green hydrogen. Furthermore, it will produce 200,000 tons of green ammonia and green methanol annually. The project’s scope spans the entire industrial chain, from renewable power generation and hydrogen production to hydrogen storage. Moreover, it covers hydrogen-based chemicals and equipment manufacturing.

Significance of the World’s Largest Integrated Green Hydrogen-Ammonia-Methanol Project

Also, the world’s largest integrated green hydrogen-ammonia-methanol project will have a major significance. Its Phase I boasts a capacity of 200,000 tons of green ammonia and green methanol. It currently stands as the largest among comparable projects worldwide. Furthermore, it is the world’s largest ground-based hydrogen storage project. The total storage capacity is sufficient to meet the daily cooking needs of 600,000 people, according to the company. Upon entering operation, the project received the ISCC EU green certification from an internationally recognized authority. It also signed the world’s first contract for the sale of green ammonia as an ocean-going shipping fuel. Additionally, these moves inject momentum into China’s hydrogen industry as it advances from pilot demonstrations. Construction of the Songyuan project began in September 2023, with a phased plan to build 3 million kilowatts of renewable power generation and 800,000 tons of green synthetic ammonia and methanol. The project’s production scale is equivalent to saving about 600,000 tons of standard coal. Moreover, it also estimates to carbon dioxide reduction emissions by 740,000 tons annually. Also, in recent years, China’s hydrogen industry has grown rapidly, with its related sectors leading the world.Furthermore, as of the end of 2024, the cumulative installed capacity of renewable energy‑based hydrogen projects worldwide exceeded 250,000 tons per year. Furthermore, China accounts for more than 50 percent of this.

Similar Significant Energy Projects in China

China is moving ahead in terms of renewable energy projects. China currently holds the No.1 global rank in renewable energy production and capacity. As of 2025, China produces approximately 32% of the world’s renewable electricity, nearly triple that of the second-ranked United States.

Furthermore, China’s lead is so significant that it has already surpassed its 2030 renewable energy targets six years early. Among the renewable energy projects that will reinstate China’s position in the renewable energy rank globally, the country launched the construction of the Tibet Dam which will be the world’s largest hydropower project upon completion.
