The world’s largest King Salman airport in Saudi Arabia is advancing as state-owned KSIA awards Terminal 6 contracts. A joint venture of Beijing-headquartered China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and Dammam-based Mofarreh AlHarbi & Partners won the deal. Moreover, their scope is to undertake the enable and substructure works for Terminal 6 at King Salman International airport (KSIA) in Riyadh.

The contract was awarded by King Salman International Airport Development Company (KSIADC). Earlier at the start of the year, KSIADC had selected three groups for the main construction of the terminal. KSIADC, which is backed by Saudi sovereign wealth vehicle the Public Investment Fund, will initially deliver the Terminal 6 main works on an early contractor involvement basis. Another major project garnering for the world’s largest airport is the Dubai Al Maktoum International Airport.  The Al Maktoum International Airport expansion is an airport infrastructure project in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, intended to increase passenger handling capacity and support the emirate’s long-term aviation growth.

Outlook on the King Salman Airport Terminal 6 Contracts

The King Salman Airport Terminal 6 contracts follows KSIADC’s receipt of prequalification statements from contractors on 1 July for two new packages at KSIA. These include the construction of a permanent East-West corridor and also landside access roads serving the North and South terminals. In May, KSIADC selected three groups to deliver the Terminal 6 apron, taxiways and other airfield infrastructure at KSIA. US firm Bechtel Corporation had been appointed as the delivery partner for the terminals at KSIA.

The project will boost the airport’s capacity to 40 million once complete. Furthermore, it is expected to be delivered before the start of Expo 2030 Riyadh. It also comes ahead of the anticipated 2034 FIFA World Cup. Designed by Foster + Partners, King Salman International Airport is planned to handle 120 million passengers annually by 2030. It is also expected to rise to 185 million by 2050. The 57-square-kilometre development will integrate the existing King Khalid International Airport into what is expected to become one of the world’s largest aviation hubs.
