NEOM Sky Stadium plans have been shelved indefinitely, removing one of Saudi Arabia’s most ambitious proposed World Cup venues. The $2.5 billion stadium formed part of The Line, NEOM’s futuristic 160-kilometre development. The proposed venue would have seated more than 46,000 spectators.
Its pitch was planned more than 350 meters above ground level. However, delays and downsizing across The Line have changed the stadium’s construction outlook. Two sources familiar with the project confirmed its indefinite suspension to Reuters.
NEOM Sky Stadium construction plans hit The Line setback
NEOM Sky Stadium was designed as a signature sports landmark within The Line. Saudi Arabia’s official World Cup plans identify the project as NEOM Stadium. The “Sky Stadium” description reflects its extraordinary elevated design.
The stadium would have featured a pitch positioned more than 350 meters above ground. Its roof would have formed part of the surrounding city structure. Furthermore, the design aimed to create an integrated sports venue within The Line.
The proposed capacity stood at 46,010 spectators. The venue would have hosted group-stage and knockout matches during the 2034 World Cup. Those stages included the round of 32, round of 16 and quarter-final.
Initially, Saudi Arabia expected the stadium to reach completion by 2032. The venue also formed part of the country’s original 15-stadium World Cup proposal.
However, the stadium depended heavily on The Line’s wider construction program. That development has subsequently faced major delays and significant scope reductions.
NEOM Sky Stadium construction stalls alongside wider giga-project changes
NEOM Sky Stadium construction now faces an uncertain future after The Line lost priority. Public Investment Fund Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan confirmed that shift earlier this year. He also said The Line was not essential before its original 2030 target.
Nevertheless, Al-Rumayyan previously denied that Saudi Arabia had cancelled projects. The latest stadium decision therefore represents a significant change surrounding the ambitious development.
MEED Projects now lists the proposed stadium as “on hold”. The platform estimates its construction cost at approximately $2.5 billion. It currently provides no completion date for the venue.
The shelving also follows broader changes affecting Saudi Arabia’s expensive giga-project program. FreeYork reported that The Line underwent reviews amid concerns surrounding costs and delivery. Those pressures have contributed to reductions across the wider development.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia continues developing other World Cup construction projects. The country plans 15 venues across five host cities for the 2034 tournament. The overall stadium program carries an estimated value of $22.7 billion.
Saudi Arabia’s changing stadium construction program extends beyond NEOM, with the $20.4 billion Jeddah Central development also featuring a major sports stadium.
The Jeddah project covers 5.7 square kilometres and includes residential, hospitality, cultural and marine facilities. Its planned stadium forms part of five major construction packages that attracted contractor bids.
NEOM Sky Stadium construction leaves World Cup venue strategy evolving
NEOM Sky Stadium construction would have delivered one of the most unconventional football venues ever proposed. Its elevated location would have distinguished it from conventional stadium developments worldwide.
The venue was also intended to continue operating after the tournament. Saudi Arabia planned to make it home to NEOM SC’s professional football teams. It would additionally support sports and active-lifestyle programs within the city.
However, the project now has no confirmed construction schedule. Saudi Arabia’s World Cup authority told Reuters that substantial tournament construction milestones were progressing. It did not specifically address the stadium’s suspension.
Other venues continue moving forward despite the NEOM setback. Aramco Stadium in Al Khobar remains under construction and is expected to reach completion soon.
Saudi Arabia will host the first 48-team World Cup staged entirely within one country. The tournament will therefore require extensive construction, refurbishment and supporting infrastructure.
The NEOM decision highlights the construction risks associated with projects dependent on wider masterplans. Changes to The Line have consequently affected the stadium’s own delivery prospects.
For now, the $2.5 billion NEOM Sky Stadium remains on hold. Its proposed elevated arena has moved from an ambitious World Cup concept to an uncertain construction project.
