The Greefspan II solar photovoltaic plant has 63.2 MWdc of installed capacity that produces approximately 150,000 MWh of clean energy per year that the Alcobendas (Spain) based company estimates that can guarantee the clean energy supply for up to 20,000 South African households, whilst avoiding the annual emission of 130,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. It begun commercial operations in 2021.

The Greefspan Solar II Solar Project

The Greefspan II solar project was developed by African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), which develops and manages private equity infrastructure funds designed to invest long-term institutional unlisted equity in African infrastructure projects, together with the IDEAS fund and Black Industrialist.

The concession for this project was awarded by the South African government under the 4th round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) Programme.

Greefspan II solar power plant is located in the Douglas town in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa

The Greefspan Solar Park and Heberty Solar Park

In 2014 Greefspan Solar Park and Herbert Solar Park Renewable Energy Projects under South African government’s Independent Power Producers procurement (IPP) program resulted in the construction of the Greefspan and Herbert Solar Parks situated near Douglas, Northern Province, South Africa.

The construction of the two renewable energy projects owned by AE- AMD Renewable Energy in partnership with the IDEAS Fund, an infrastructure fund managed by Old Mutual Investment Group of South Africa, commenced with Herbert Solar Park in December 2012, followed with Greefspan Solar Park in January 2013. Both projects were handed over to the AE- AMD in April 2014.

SunPower acted as AE-AMD Renewable Energy’s Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) partner for both projects. These are jointly sitting on 167 hectares of land and entail ground mounted solar systems featuring 137,862 photovoltaic solar panels on single-axis trackers. The trackers are programmed to follow the sun throughout the day, ensuring that maximum amount of power is being generated.

Herbert Solar Park produces 22 MW while Greefspan Solar Park produces 11 MW.

Besides designing and manufacturing solar panels and systems, SunPower also has a successful track record of building solar power plants around the world. The company’s global track record includes  the California Valley Solar Ranch, a 250 MW project in California,In addition to the Solar Star, a 579 MW plant.
