Govt commits to avail Sustainable power in Nigeria

The Federal Government has confirmed its commitment to supply sustainable power in Nigeria to boost electricity capabilities of the country.

Mustapha Baba Shehuri, the State Minister for Works, Power and Housing, has urged all the stakeholders in the power sector to come up with the right energy mix among the volumes of energy resources that will serve the best interest in delivering power across the country.

Speaking during the second edition of the National Council on Power organized by the Ministry of Works, Power and Housing in Kaduna, Shehuri stated that the power industry is at the moment experiencing specific challenges. He further urged the council to deliberate the challenges now that the industry is undergoing transition.

The National Council on Power discussed sensitive issues on gas to power including the current constraints and the gas resources that the country has and the prospect of better utilization of the resources. The council also touched on the key actors in the sector, international oil companies NNPC and others and what they are required to fulfil for a better result. Pricing issues, commercial issues and security are at the centre of the challenges that the sector is currently experiencing.

According to Power Ministry Permanent Secretary Louis Edozien, committees will be established and saddled with the specific issues that need urgent attention. Additionally, all stakeholders are required to be on board in order to transform the power sector.

Gas infrastructural development

However, gas infrastructural development needs to be aligned with the generation capabilities on how to use gas resources more creatively in terms of LPG, LNG and other ways of better utilizing the country’s gas resources.

The first committee will be responsible with issues concerning the ideal energy mix for the country. On the other hand, the second committee will watch over developing energy target and mix that will better serve the country as well as focusing on how to effectively harness the available energy resources. Besides, Nigeria being rich in abundant gas, the country prides itself with solar resources, wind and coal.
