Renovation works of the Accra Sports Stadium in Ghana have commenced; this is according to the contractors from the Green Grass Technology (GGT) as Ghana races with time to meet a deadline for the hosting of the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations.

Despite not having a clear timeline for the completion of the entire project, the facility will be ready for the championship and perhaps, the continuation of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) which is currently in limbo following steps taken by government to liquidate the Ghana Football Association (GFA)

On completion, the stadium would be expected to be in shape, safe and in a perfect condition for the November showpiece of women football.

Renovations on the stadium

Renovations will include re-grassing of the football pitch followed by major works including on the roof of the VVIP and VIP Stands as well as the giant scoreboard which has been reduced to scraps.

Ghana’s largest stadium-Baba Yara Sports Stadium (also Kumasi Sports Stadium) is a multi-purpose stadium with a seating capacity of 40,528. The Kumasi Stadium is used mostly for football matches, although it is also used for athletics. It is the home of one of Africa’s most popular sports club, Asante Kotoko.

However, in 2016, Ghana planned for the construction of a 60,000 capacity stadium. The multi-billion-dollar complex will be constructed along Tema’s coastline. The facility will also involve construction of residential mixed-use accommodations targeting cross-border corporations and regional companies as well as retail commercial.
