The construction of the $4bn+ Project Tallmadge data center by Takanock advances in Strasburg, Virginia with zoning approval. Developer Takanock is proposing the development of an 180MW campus near Insterstat 81’s Exit 296 and the Mercury Paper facility. Official documents from the Town of Strasburg note the land parcel is zoned for industrial use. Conversely, it means the “data center use is by-right” according to the town’s website about the data center.
Additional permitting for the site is set to be complete by Q3 2027. Moreover, construction will begin in that same quarter, according to a fact sheet about the data center made by Takanock. Details about the facility’s capacity were not provided. The developer has said that the facility will bring “hundreds of construction jobs” to the region “at wages above the area average” and “significantly increase the tax revenue received by the town of Strasburg.”
A Takanock spokesperson noted that the data center will use closed-loop cooling. Moreover, it added that the company was bringing its own power by way of 400MW of front-of-the-meter on-site natural gas generation. Another data center project that is advancing despite significant pushback is the $700M+ DC BLOX data center near Nashville Zoo which is facing a fierce pushback as a petition against the project tops 500k signatures. It has been about three weeks since the Nashville Zoo launched a petition against the proposed facility.
Scope of Implementation on the Project Tallmadge Data Center by Takanock
Planning on Project Tallmadge data center by Takanock commenced early planning and site-related activities in 2024. According to the county, construction is potentially starting in late 2027 and concluding around 2030. Some locals have expressed opposition to the data center since information about the project surfaced in March 2025. It cites concerns about the impact of a data center on air quality, noise, pollution, water, and power.
Moreover, a now-closed petition on iPetitions against the facility has received 73 signatures. The firm is an energy company founded in 2023 by Kenneth Davies, founder of Google Energy and later head of Microsoft’s renewable strategy globally. He is also co-founder of Birch Infrastructure and its Rowan unit.
The company is funded by DigitalBridge and aims to address the power shortages in core markets by providing flexible on-site power solutions. Its aim is to be able to serve as primary power until the completion of a substation and a wholesale grid resource thereafter. The firm has previously been linked to a project in Elkhart, Indiana.
