Trans-Sahara Gas Pipeline Project

Algeria, the world’s third-largest oil producer is moving forward with the Trans-Sahara gas pipeline project. Its scope entails a 4,100-kilometer project that is designed to supply natural gas from the continent to Europe. The nation’s state-owned Sonatrach has sent a delegation to Niger to advance talks on the monumental project. According to the official Algerian news agency, the visit focuses on technical and operational details ahead of the pipeline’s operational launch immediately after Ramadan.

The project, which was first proposed in the 1970s, will connect Nigeria’s gas fields in Warri to Algeria’s Hassi R’Mel. Moreover, it will link into existing pipelines that supply European markets. The project has delayed for decades despite advancements from involved nations to ensure it full-scale development.

With technical oversight now underway, the long-stalled trans-Sahara pipeline appears closer than ever to reality. The collaboration between Nigeria, Niger, and Algeria could finally deliver a decades-old vision of a West-to-North Africa gas corridor. Another significant oil project taking shape is the $5 billion EACOP pipeline project in East Africa.

Challenges Facing the Implementation of the Trans-Sahara Gas Pipeline Project

The Trans-Sahara gas pipeline has been marred by decades of stalls and controversies as full-scale implementation has not been achieved. Analysts note that decades of delays were caused by financing, security, and cross-border regulatory hurdles. Moreover, this is despite earlier studies confirming the pipeline’s technical and economic feasibility.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has confirmed that Sonatrach will lead construction. It highlights the company’s position as one of the world’s largest gas operators. The 4,100km pipeline is expected to transport up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually, providing Europe with an alternative to Russian energy.

Algeria exported 54 billion cubic meters in 2021, primarily to Italy and Spain, and the pipeline could expand these flows significantly. For Nigeria and Niger, the project is a strategic opportunity to integrate regional energy infrastructure and secure revenues from gas exports.

Moreover, it will enhance energy security and strengthen economic ties between the West and the North. It will also reshape regional energy dynamics and opening new markets for African gas.
