The $1 billion-plus transformation of Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., has reached a major milestone with the release of new renderings showing the venue’s redesigned exterior and upgraded fan spaces.
Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) and Capital One unveiled the latest designs on August 11, 2026, offering a clearer look at the arena that will emerge from the ongoing redevelopment. The project remains on schedule for completion ahead of the 2027–28 NBA and NHL seasons.
The latest renderings show how the project will reshape both the appearance and internal experience of the downtown Washington venue. The work focuses heavily on the District Level, formerly the 100 Level, and the Terrace Level, formerly the 400 Level.
New Design Gives Capital One Arena a New Look
The redesigned arena will feature a new exterior intended to give the building a stronger presence in downtown Washington.
Inside, expanded entrances and improved vertical circulation will create easier connections between different areas of the venue. The redevelopment will also introduce new gathering spaces designed to keep fans engaged beyond the seating bowl.
One of the most distinctive additions will be the new Visibowl, which will give fans views into the arena from the concourse. The feature forms part of a broader strategy to turn circulation areas into destinations rather than simply spaces people pass through.
The District Level will include four distinct districts and new social destinations, while the Terrace Level will feature Center Stage Bars and a food hall extending along the F Street side of the building.
Construction Continues Toward 2027 Completion
The new renderings do not mark the start of construction. Instead, they show what the ongoing transformation is expected to deliver as the project moves toward its final stages.
MSE says the full transformation remains on schedule for completion ahead of the 2027–28 NBA and NHL seasons. Once complete, the arena is expected to host approximately 250 events each year.
The venue will continue serving as the home of the NHL’s Washington Capitals, NBA’s Washington Wizards and Georgetown men’s basketball team. It will also host Washington Mystics games, concerts, family shows and other major entertainment events.
Capital One Arena is also scheduled to host the 2027 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship Frozen Four and the 2028 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Regional.
More Than a Renovated Sports Venue
The transformation is designed to change how the arena functions on event days, with upgraded food and beverage options, expanded entrances, new social spaces and improved connections throughout the building.
The project will also relocate Capital One’s dedicated cardholder entrance to F Street. Beginning in fall 2027, the entrance will be available to cardholders for all events rather than only selected Capitals and Wizards games.
MSE and Capital One also announced a 20-year extension of their naming-rights partnership as part of the arena’s next chapter.
The combination of physical upgrades and expanded hospitality reflects a broader trend among major U.S. sports venues. Teams and venue owners are increasingly investing in renovations that make stadiums and arenas year-round entertainment destinations rather than facilities focused solely on game-day seating.
The investment in Washington’s sports infrastructure extends beyond the Capital One Arena transformation. Clark, Mortenson and SmootDC have also been selected to build the new Washington Commanders stadium at the former RFK Stadium site, with main construction expected to begin in spring 2027. The approximately 65,000-seat stadium is targeting completion in spring 2030.
