Caterpillar Inc. plans to invest approximately $1 billion in North Carolina to expand manufacturing capacity for compact construction equipment, including through a new manufacturing facility in Sanford.
The project will increase Caterpillar’s capacity to produce compact track loaders and telehandlers as the company expands its Cat Compact business and responds to growing demand for smaller machines used across construction, landscaping, agriculture and material handling.
Caterpillar announced the investment on September 30, 2026. The company said the planned Sanford facility will use advanced manufacturing technologies, automation, digital production systems and integrated logistics capabilities.
The new facility will expand Caterpillar’s existing manufacturing presence in Sanford rather than establish the company’s first operation in the city.
Caterpillar to expand compact equipment manufacturing
The planned facility will support production of compact track loaders and telehandlers, two equipment categories that serve a wide range of jobsite applications.
Compact track loaders can support material movement, grading and other construction activities, while telehandlers provide lifting and material-handling capabilities across construction and other industries.
Caterpillar said the additional manufacturing capacity will support its Cat Compact strategy, which focuses on serving small contractors and growing businesses with a broader range of equipment, services and solutions.
The company expects the new manufacturing operation to incorporate automation, robotics and digital production systems. Caterpillar also plans to integrate logistics capabilities into the facility to create a more connected manufacturing operation.
The company said the technology investment is intended to improve safety, quality and operational performance.
$1B project builds on existing Sanford operations
The investment follows Caterpillar’s earlier expansion of its Sanford workforce.
In May 2026, Caterpillar announced plans to add 600 workers at its Sanford operation as demand for compact equipment increased. The existing facility has produced compact equipment for Caterpillar since the company began manufacturing in Sanford in 1999.
Caterpillar’s Sanford operation currently supports the production of compact track loaders and other equipment. The company has also continued recruiting for manufacturing, engineering and production positions at the site.
The latest investment will expand that manufacturing base with a new facility focused on increasing production capacity.
Caterpillar has not disclosed the planned size of the new building, acreage, construction cost breakdown, production capacity, construction contractor, architect, groundbreaking date or completion date.
Those details leave the construction schedule and project delivery team yet to be announced.
North Carolina selected for manufacturing expansion
Caterpillar said Sanford was selected because of its existing presence in North Carolina, the local workforce and manufacturing expertise already established at the site.
The company also expects the investment to support advanced manufacturing careers. Training opportunities will include areas such as automation, robotics, digital manufacturing and advanced production systems.
The project comes shortly after local officials approved incentives for an unnamed large manufacturing development in Sanford.
In September, Lee County approved up to $46 million in incentives for a project known as Project Paragon. The City of Sanford separately approved an incentive package worth up to $39.5 million. Public documents described that project as involving roughly $1 billion in investment and at least 1,950 full-time jobs.
Officials had not publicly identified the company behind Project Paragon at the time.
Caterpillar’s September 30 announcement does not identify the new $1 billion investment as Project Paragon. Therefore, the two developments should not be treated as the same project without further confirmation from Caterpillar or local officials.
For now, Caterpillar has confirmed plans for a new $1 billion manufacturing facility in Sanford that will expand production of compact track loaders and telehandlers.
The investment adds another major manufacturing development to Caterpillar’s existing North Carolina footprint while expanding capacity for the company’s compact-equipment business.
Additionally, Caterpillar’s planned Sanford facility adds to a broader wave of advanced manufacturing investment in the region. In Virginia, the Pittsylvania County rocket motor manufacturing plant has already broken ground on its new production facility. The projects serve different markets, but both involve major investments in technology-intensive manufacturing capacity and highlight continued industrial development across the Mid-Atlantic.
